Two ego state model
It is an ego state model that sought to correct inaccuracies in the three ego state model. Berne devised that there was an Adult, Parent and Child ego states. The two ego state model says that there is a Child ego state and a Parent ego state. The Adult ego state is placed in the Parent ego state. The Adult ego state is one part of the Parent ego state. The information we learn at school is all Parent ego state introjects. How we learn to speak, add up and learn how to think is all just copied from our teachers. Just like our morals and values are copied from our parents. There is no absolute truth where facts exist out side a person’s own belief system. Berne mistakenly concluded that there was and thus mistakenly put the Adult ego state as separate from the Parent ego state.

I used that model in my communications presentations regarding human interaction or interpersonal skills. I called it the PAC man game of communication or battle of ego states. A parent (P) wanting to be an authority is disciplining a child (C), the child responds with resistance and begins argueing with the parent. The parent now engages with the child argueing back, hence the parent P has now become a child C, the child dominates the interaction and becomes the parent P. Same with two adults (A) argueing. One adult criticizes the other, the other adult becomes angry and lashes out or becomes a child C instead of maintaing the A level, the other adult can now take charge and be either the P or the A as he can now be an adult and assertive, be a parent and punitive putting the anger reaction in its place. I watch for these patterns in communication in therapy with couples, during group inpatient psycho therapy and when out in public just chatting with people or observing them communicate. I love debate and it holds true that to battle wits with unarmed people is useless time. The models above show me one thing, the three stage model applies to communication more than as an explanation of ego states, the two ego state model reflects more about psychology and the human mind. Could more hats we wear in life be ego states as well? endless I say.
Mitch, and I agree a great blog here.

It sure sounds like you understand that explanation of human communication Mitch.
Sometimes people seem to have a negative reaction to the three circles for some reason. (I'm not saying that you are Mitch). I have never really understood that. It is just an explanation of human communication. Its not the answer to life or better and bigger than any other explanation of communication. Its just one of the many explanations. It has its uses in the counselling setting and at times other explanations have their use as well.
Oh well, if it gets a reaction like that sometimes I guess it makes a point of some kind
Thanks for dropping by and commenting. I find them interesting to read and consider.

"There is no absolute truth where facts exist out side a person’s own belief system."
Um...are you sure about that? Can you prove it?
Wouldn't you want to be sure, before you accuse someone of "mistakenly" concluding otherwise?

Tony, If the model above was formulated after Ericksons theory on development and more, the circles would be full of letters. Child, Adolescent, teen, adult, parent and possibley senior or elderly, grandparent etc. What are the dimensions and variables of Ego. In a spiritual sense the Ego could simply mean Edging God Out or self will run riot. Sanity vs Insanity.
"There is no absolute truth where facts exist out side a person’s own belief system." I guess some facts do exist outside a belief system. some facts do not as well. They say the belief system is based on how one interprets his/her environment (non-factual) and not so much the environment we hear of so much in the famous "product of an environment" (fact) . I believe the sun is too bright to stare at? and that's a fact, LOL.

You’re just talking about what happens in our heads usually when we’re trying to decide on stuff right? How we argue with ourselves until we come up with a direction we’re willing to take on things, right? Cause, yeah that makes sense to me, but you’ve got to know, I don’t know anything so – maybe it’s just a step of faith – Perhaps fact not a fluid enough kind of word for this subject. Maybe I’m just willing to believe you…
It helps me to understand what happens when ever we, or I should say - I argue with you though. I’ll be watching out for that from now on. Happy day Graffiti…

An interesting Idea Mitch with Erikson's developmental theory and the ego.
Facts existing outside beliefs systems?
A question I have considered for some time and of course it raises the question of "absolute truth or not?".
In the final analysis, my view is that absolute truth does not exist and thus there are no facts outside belief systems and thus we have the two ego state model.
We have all had dreams that are very real, where when we wake up we think, "Phew, thank goodness that was only a dream". How do you know you are not doing that now?

Am I dreaming. Hmmm is life reality or is my reality my life and therefore not real, not factual or more a projection of how I see from my mind (ego states). My truth!
Thanks, my day will be intersting now.....LOL

Yeah yeah - sure Mr Graffiti. I do have a question though. Why is it that sometimes you answer as Graffiti and other times you answer as Tony? Do you have another blog here?
