My school medals

Kahless asks about my medals I won when I was a youngster at school, so here they are.

These are from when I was at Hale School.

Here is me holding my swimming trophy after I won it earlier that day.
Tony with swimming medal

It was a round medal disc that was mounted in a plastic trophy type of thing. The only thing I have left is the round medal disc. See the front and back of it below. R/U stands for "Runner up". I came second in the under 13 years old swimming championship.

Below is a medal I won for playing Rugby Union. I was the "fairest and best" of the team over the season in 1971 when I was 14 years old (2nd year high school). I also actually won it in 1972 as well but I do not have that medal anymore.

Below is the cup I won for athletics at school. It is titled "A. White", because my name is actually Anthony.
Open champion. 1969

How very, very cool, Tony! I can see from that photo of you as a child that you must have been somewhat active and fit in your boyhood. That is wonderful and I imagine it has probably served you well for your health. When I was a girl, I don't remember so many heavy children as there are today. My husband did not go to school with me, and he does not remember this being the case, either. It seems people were much more physically active in the past and children played more. Thanks for sharing your trophies and medals, Tony. Really neat to see them!

Hi Tony,

Cool medals and trophies. It was always great to win some silverware at sports and to show it off to mum and everyone else to admire.

Fantastic Tony!

They look really nice medals and trophies; I love the detail on them. None of the tacky tat that you got from the eighties onwards!
Glad you had some memories too.

And Lynn, I agree with you. Wernt many overweight kids when I was young either. But then how many kids have to walk home several miles from school these days?

Are we sounding like old farts?

I like old farts. My dads an old fart - the best old fart in the whole world! Is 45 an old fart? Hmm...

Tony, they did make them nicer back then. You did really good. And even better to have kept them this long. As soon as the boys grew up and we moved, our trophies either got lost or are sitting somewhere in a box.

Best and fairest. Best award to recieve in a team sport. That's just my opinion anyway. Usually the team players or coaches vote that one in. It says something of your character back then. Well done Tony! Great score! I'm so proud of you

Yes there certainly are more fat kids these days then there were in the days when that first photograph was taken.
I can remember on a weekend just running out of the house with a frend and playing for 4 hours before coming home for lunch.

These days if a Parent did that they would get a visit from the dept of child protection to investigate weather you were properply supervising your child.

Hi Jack,

trophies are nice to have as you say.

What happened to the English with Croatia. I think I heard they sacked the team manager afterwards?

Hi Tony,

Yes a disappointing result. It's not something I would've mentioned unless somebody brought it up, as I try to concentrate on ze beautiful game of fussball( why do I say the in a French accent- ooh la la) and not Wednesday's debacle.

The following day all my footy contacts at work were very blue. It was a very sad, sad day, thinking ahead to next Summer when the European Championships take place without England ( Boo-Hoo). I've also heard that Umbro ( who make the England kit) and all the pubs are very upset as they are going to lose lots of revenue as a consequence of the result.

I'm hoping Man Utd cheer me up on Saturday by beating Bolton and putting on a dazzling display. I think West Ham play Spurs on Sunday which should be a good match.

Talking of the Hammers I'm hoping Harry Redknapp becomes the new England manager, although he's probably too much of a maverick ( interesting word that Tony) for the FA. who will probably appoint an ineffective yes man. Too bad.

Best wishes in these troubled times for English footy.
